7 Tips For Being Comfortable In Front Of The Camera

How to be comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

7 tips for being comfortable in front of the camera

We’ve all experienced being nervous in front of the camera. Especially if it’s your first time hiring a professional photographer, these are the tips you need to feel more comfortable in front of the camera!

So, from a photographer and fellow person who can sometimes clam up in front of the camera, here are my best tips to getting more comfortable during your shoots:

1. Pick a photographer you vibe with.

This might be self explanatory, but it really helps when you’re working with someone who can make you feel good about yourself! As with any service, you want to do your due diligence. Read through their website, parse through their Instagram and schedule a consultation call with them. Listen to your gut! Work with someone whose work you not only like, but whose personality you enjoy.

2. Practice!

Practice posing with friends, practice posing by yourself, just practice! Even selfies count. It helps you know what angles you like and what might be your “better” side. Having that bit of confidence before stepping into your personal branding shoot will help you be more comfortable in front of the camera.

3. Build a pump up playlist.

I tell all of my clients to build a pump up playlist. Include songs that really get that serotonin firing! Playing music that you love will get you out of your head and will allow you to get more comfortable on camera. Taking mini dance breaks during the shoot is also encouraged.

4. Dress for comfort and authenticity.

Your priority when picking your outfits for your shoot should always be representing yourself authentically. This means wearing clothes that you would normally wear and clothes that you’d feel comfortable in! The worst thing you can do for yourself is wear an outfit that makes you feel stiff and awkward.

5. Trust your photographer.

They’re the ones with their eyes behind the lens, so if they tell you to move your arm back, look to the side, or anything else, trust that they’re trying to capture the best photo for you! So many times I’ve heard my clients say, “That felt a little awkward but it looks so good on camera!” Yes, girl. It’s cause I got you!

6. Keep doing shoots.

As they say… Practice! Practice! Practice! The only way you’ll get more comfortable in front of the camera is to keep doing shoots. They can even be shoots with your friends and your iPhone, it doesn’t matter! As long as you’re practicing you’ll become increasingly comfortable in front of the camera.

7. Have fun.

Finally, just have fun! Your energy always comes through in a photo. The more you have fun, the more personable your images will be. Try not to overcomplicate things or intimidate yourself in the process.
